Frequently Asked Questions

• How do I join RISA?

Click the Join/Renew menu item to sign up or renew your membership. You can join as an individual, a band or a family. Pay for your annual membership online with a credit card, or mail us a check.

• How long is the membership?

The membership extends for a year from the date of your payment. We will send you an email when it is time to renew! If you pay online, you can also set it to auto-renew on your anniversary date.

• Do I have to play an instrument?

No; you don't even have to be able to sing or to write songs! We're here to help, so join us and tap into your creativity.

• What if I have never written a song?

You can be a beginner and not have written any songs! We will help you craft your first song (or your second, or your third...) through our workshops.

• Do l need to be from Rhode Island?

No. You don't have to be from Rhode Island or even live in RI to be a RISA Member!

• How can I play RISA gigs?

We select performers for our events from our list of RISA members. Selections are based on the venue/event. We will communicate via the contact info you share on your individual member page. You are also welcome to answer a call for RISA member performers. If there is a particular RISA event you'd love to play, contact us and let us know!

• Where are RISA meetings held?

The meetings are for board members, but we occasionally welcome all members for their input. You can find the location of each meeting on our RISA Calendar.

RISA Workshops are held at local music venues and RISA Critiques are held at a board member's home. Watch the Events page or follow RISA on Facebook to stay in the know!

• What is SITR?

SITR stands for Songwriters in the Round. It is a showcase format that started in Nashville where multiple songwriters perform on stage and sing their original songs one by one. The fun and challenge of a RISA SITR is that the audience participates, coming up with songwriting themes. Then the songwriters at the next SITR must perform a song they wrote about, or was inspired by, the theme provided by the audience!
